Transportation

Many providers listed below offer nonemergency transportation for medical appointments, to and from nursing homes and hospitals, for holiday or special-occasion visits, and other trips. Some hospitals, eye doctors, medical, rehabilitation, or other providers offer free transportation for patients or clients to/from their facilities. Private pay; TennCare, when applicable.

Knoxville Area Transit (KAT): 637-3000

Public transportation. The City of Knoxville’s public transportation system providing professional transit service to residents and visitors. Adults (age 65+) and persons with disabilities pay half fare with KAT ID or Medicare card.

KAT LIFT: 215-7850

KAT’s paratransit service transports passengers with disabilities (as defined by ADA), Mon.-Sun. Passengers must be certified before riding. Fare is $2 per one-way trip. Guests also pay fare. Personal Care Attendants ride free. Service is door to door within service area. Trip must be scheduled at least one day in advance.

Provides demand-response public transportation to Knox County residents who cannot use KAT or KAT LIFT throughout all of Knox County. Service is wheelchair accessible, door-to-door, and available Monday through Saturday. Fare is $2 each way. Trips must be scheduled at least by 11 am the day before the service is needed.

Out-of-Town Travel

Some bus lines and airlines offer senior citizen discounts. Airlines provide boarding and transit assistance on request.

Smart Trips: 215-2916

City/county ride-share agency matches personal rider and commuters who want to carpool, works with employers, has bicycling programs, and more. Participants are eligible to win gift cards from area vendors.

Taxicab Inspector: 215-7379

Call to report complaints or unresolved problems with taxicab or city contracted wrecker service companies.

Taxicabs

There are maximum rates that taxi companies may charge. Check with Taxicab Inspector for rates. Ask dispatcher in advance for approximate fare. Some companies offer special services for seniors, but you must ask.
