Personal Emergency Response Systems

Personal emergency response systems (PERS) enable seniors to remain independent and provide 24-hour contact in case of accidents and emergencies, medical or non-medical. Help is available at the press of a button usually worn on waterproof necklace, wristband, or belt clip. Some systems automatically call 911, others allow user to determine their own emergency contacts. Requires installation and monthly fee. Systems can be used for 24-hour reassurance. Security system companies also offer PERS.

Some offer at extra cost, reminders about medications, doctors’ appointments, blood sugar checks, exercise, meals, etc. Reminders can be personalized recorded messages, but some use 24-hour attendants.
