To kick off AFA 2021, we hope you will attend our Outdoor Senior Expo on Wednesday, November 3rd, 1 pm – 4 pm at O’Connor Senior Center (611 Winona St. in Knoxville). Vendors will provide resources and information on programs and services for seniors and hand out goodie bags and other treats for you to take home.

We will hold our AFA Virtual Conference online on Thursday, November 4, 9:15 – 3 pm.

Now in its 37th year, Aging: A Family Affair will once again provide valuable information and resources on topics related to aging that is helpful not only to seniors, but to their families, caregivers, and professionals.

“Managing the Stress of Caregiving” with Lori Bishop, Volunteer Executive Director, The Caregiver Superhero Society

Caregiving can be tough for the entire family. In this presentation, learn practical tips on how to manage the stress of caregiving.

Lori Bishop is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ by trade but became part of the caregiver community in 2015 when her father dropped into a deep depression. He was later diagnosed with frontal temporal dementia. ICdzk3SwtzRpKqasu4K6FNsBLLsvOPwUQqcpa5Dhe.jpgn 2019, her mother was also diagnosed with dementia. She and her husband, Mike, care for them both. Lori Bishop continues her work in the financial planning arena but has devoted herself to supporting and educating family caregivers. Nearly one third of the clients she serves are caregivers. In 2018, Lori became a trainer for the “Dealing with Dementia” workshop, a program developed by the Rosalyn Carter Institute for Caregiving. She hosts a Caregiver Café for family caregivers twice a month in Maryville. In 2020, Lori launched a non-profit, The Caregiver Superhero Society where she serves as Volunteer Executive Director. That organization funds education and support of family caregivers.

Cyber crimes are on the rise. In this presentation, find out more about what you can do to protect yourself from cyber criminals, how you can report cyber crime, and the Bureau’s efforts in combating the evolving cyber threat.

The FBI is the lead federal agency for investigating cyber attacks and intrusions. They collect and share intelligence and engage with victims while working to unmask those committing malicious cyber activities, wherever they are.

“Power of Attorney: Why is it so Important?” with Amelia Crotwell, Certified Elder Law Attorney, Elder Law of East Tennessee

Choosing the right Power of Attorney is vitally important to your aging journey. Learn what characteristics should be considered when choosing a POA, and how to identify and choose a POA.

Amelia has helped families with long-term care and special needs challenges for almost 20 years. She practices primarily Life Care Planning and special needs trusts, but she also pitches in to collaborate with ELET attorneys, lending her experience on questions of elder law, wills and trusts, Medicare, Medicaid planning, trust administration, probate, and veterans benefits planning. She has been Certified as an Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation since 2011 and is the president-elect of the Life Care Planning Law Firms Association and a co-chair of their strategic planning committee.

“Tools to Manage your Mental Health” with Jennifer Perion PhD, CHES, Assistant Professor, The University of Tennessee College of Public Health

Taking care of your mental health is a very important piece of your overall health. Learn how to identify when your loved one is struggling with their mental health. Also learn practical tips on how to help others and on managing your own mental health.

Jennifer Perion, PhD, CHES earned a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies and then a PhD in Health Education from the University of Toledo. As a doctoral student she earned a Master Online Instructor Certificate and became a Certified Higher Education Course Reviewer for Quality Matters. Prior to joining the University of Tennessee as an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Online MPH program, she taught public health and aging courses to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Toledo and Indiana State University. She has a Graduate Certificate in Contemporary Gerontological Practice and her research interests are focused on aging, especially the needs of family and professional caregivers and the social experiences of older adults with dementia. She has studied the importance of friendship among older adults with dementia and was awarded a Pilot Research Project grant to study the experiences of adolescents who provide caregiving support for family members with dementia. Currently, she is investigating a multi-sensory technology designed to deliver engagement opportunities for older adults with moderate or severe dementia.
