Transportation

Many of the providers listed below offer nonemergency transportation for medical appointments, to and from nursing homes and hospitals, for holiday or special-occasion visits, and other trips. Some hospitals; eye doctors; medical, rehabilitation, or other service providers offer free transportation for their patients or clients to or from their facilities. Private pay; TennCare, when applicable. Private companies and individuals also provide transportation for errands; see "Errand Services."

Knoxville Area Transit. Seniors Freedom program allows anyone age 65 and older to ride for free. Must show Medicare card and photo ID, or purchase a Seniors Freedom ID for $2.00. Persons with disabilities can pay half fare with KAT ID or Medicare card. Call or check web site for schedules.

Knoxville Area Transit. Minibuses available for passengers with disabilities (as defined by Americans with Disabilities Act), Mon.-Sun. Passengers must be certified before riding. Operates same hours as buses. Fare is $2.50 per one-way trip. Guests must also pay fare; Personal Care Attendants (PCAs) ride free. Service is door to door. Trip must be scheduled at least one day before service. Call to request application and handbook.

Lift-equipped minibuses transport Knox County residents who cannot use the KAT bus system to get to medical appointments, employment, and other essential errands. Employment-related trips allow side trips for delivery of children to day care. Sliding scale fare. Call at least by noon of previous day for reservation; evening and weekend trips can be arranged for a fee.

Out-of-Town Travel

Some bus lines and airlines give senior citizen discounts. Airlines provide assistance and wheelchairs upon request for passengers boarding and changing planes.

In-home assessment, case management, and referral to services. Volunteers provide escorted transportation for errands, grocery shopping, and more. Volunteers make limited minor home repairs and safety modifications for older adults who meet eligibility requirements. No fees; contributions accepted.

St. Mary's Care Van for Seniors

Provides transportation to St. Mary’s physicians and facilities throughout Knox County. Must be a member of St. Mary’s PrimeLife for Seniors (membership is free). Donations accepted.

See Taxicabs in phone book yellow pages. There are maximum rates that taxi companies may charge. Check with Taxicab Inspector for rates. Check fare with dispatcher in advance. Some companies offer senior discounts or other special services for seniors.

For TennCare-authorized medical or behavioral health trips only when family or KAT transportation are not available. Call the organizations listed below to arrange transportation covered by TennCare.
