Not Sure What Movies to See?
We’ve had members tell us it’s difficult to know what movies they might like. Fortunately, AARP recently announced the winners of their Movies for Grownups Awards. Here are a few:
Best Movie: The Savages - Selfish, grown-up kids learn that a parent’s mistakes are no license to mess up their own lives.
Runners-up: The Kite Runner: A childhood friendship transcends war, time and even death. Atonement: A love story, told on an epic scale. Michael Clayton: A lawyer learns you have to be a bit crazy to do the right thing. The Bucket List: Dying friends learn to live for the moment.
Best Comedy for Grownups: The Darjeeling Limited: Three oddball brothers embark on a train tip across India in what’s defined loosely as “a spiritual quest.” Runner-Up: Dan in Real Life: A fortysomething widower discovers that the woman of his dreams is his brother’s girlfriend.
Best Intergenerational Movie: The Namesake: Raising their children in the New York suburbs, two parents from India find their traditions clashing with U.S. culture. Runner-Up: The Great Debaters: The debate coach at a black college inspires his team to greatness.
Best Documentary: In the Shadow of the Moon: A triumphant retelling of America’s Apollo program, the crowning human technical achievement of the 20th century. Runner-Up: Run, Granny, Run: At 94, Doris Haddock runs for the U.S. Senate.
Best Movie for Grownups Who Refuse to Grow Up: Enchanted: A story of an animated princess stuck in real-life New York City.
Best Grownup Love Story: Hairspray: Watch the long-married husband and wife pair dance and sing “You’re Timeless to Me,” an ode to the wonderful predictability of longtime love- and you’ll see these two are hopelessly, endlessly in love.
