Knox County Nursing Homes
For a list of the 23 nursing homes in the eight counties surrounding Knox County, call the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, listed above, or Senior Citizens Information & Referral Service, 546-6262. For information about nursing home admissions and financing see "Action Guide." Payment method varies; Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, long-term-care insurance, and private pay. Not all nursing homes accept patients on Medicaid. All Medicaid applications to nursing homes are screened by Medicaid/TennCare.
Many Knox County nursing homes provide both skilled and intermediate care (see page 36 for definitions of these terms), although some may provide only one or the other. Some hospitals also have transitional care units that provide services equivalent to those found in nursing homes (see page 152 for description). Skilled care, or transitional care, can include high-level wound care, respirators, tube feeding, intravenous therapy, and more.
Nursing homes must provide mental health counseling for residents who need it; most do so by contract with a mental health agency. Cost is paid by resident, although it is often covered by Medicare, TennCare, or private insurance. Nursing homes also must offer rehabilitation services (physical, speech, and occupational therapy) for residents who need it. Some offer rehabilitation services on an outpatient basis as well. A doctor must prescribe the therapy, but the patient can choose the provider.
