Grandparents As Parents Program

Since it began in 2000, the Knoxville-Knox County Grandparents as Parents Program has provided support, information, and referrals to community resources. In 2007, Volunteer Advocacy was added to Grandparents as Parents Program services. There is no age or income requirement to join the free program.
If you want to become a member or are interested in more information, call the CAC Office on Aging at 524-2786.

About the Program

In August 2000, the Knoxville-Knox County Community Action Committee’s Office on Aging created the Grandparents as Parents Program to address the unique needs of grandparent and relative caregivers raising children whose parents were unable to care for them. The Grandparents as Parents Program was one of the first in Tennessee to recognize the caregiver’s need for information, support, and resources. By “parenting again,” grandparents and relative caregivers keep families together, provide safe homes, and avoid foster home placement of the children.

The Grandparents as Parents Program provides support meetings and volunteer advocacy support with information and referrals for:

  • Parenting Again
  • Benefits
  • Custody and Guardianship
  • Financial Assistance
  • Health and Mental Health Services
  • Housing

Volunteer Advocacy

Grandparents and relative caregivers need “legal status” to enroll children in school or access needed medical care when parents are absent. But obtaining custody or guardianship of a child can be confusing and challenging.

Now, trained Volunteer Advocates can assist grandparents through the Juvenile Court custody process with information, guidance, and support. Volunteer Advocates can also help grandparents prepare for and attend school Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings. Just call to request a meeting with a Volunteer Advocate.
