Homemakers, Sitters & In-Home Services
These agencies can provide some of the following: sitters, escorted transportation, grocery shopping, meal preparation, companionship, and light housekeeping. Some of these agencies provide 24-hour care or live-in sitters (see Live-In Help for description). Most of these agencies offer personal care (bathing, dressing, changing beds, hair care, and more); some offer personal care packages for a flat rate, others charge an hourly fee. Many home health care agencies also provide personal care. These services can help frail older persons remain in their homes instead of entering a long-term-care facility.
Agencies that provide these services must now be licensed as personal support service agencies with the Tennessee Department of Mental Health. To be listed in this directory, these agencies must be licensed as well as meet other criteria. When you hire an individual or company to come onto your property or into your home, you take on a certain amount of risk, as does the person you’re hiring. See the Action Guide for a list of questions to ask when hiring an in-home service.
Some agencies will perform an in-home assessment of client’s needs, then make recommendations to client and family or referrals to community agencies and businesses to provide the needed services. Some agencies provide assessment and referrals for free, others might charge.
Some of the agencies listed provide services such as sitters, bill-paying, money manage-ment, in-home counseling, care coordination, pet care, foot care, and other tasks that seniors might need help with. If you need a specific service, call and ask whether it is offered. For names of additional agencies that offer such services, call Senior Citizens Information & Referral Service, 546-6262.
Most nonmedical in-home services are not covered by Medicare, TennCare, or private medical insurance but are covered by some long-term-care insurance. Rates vary.
